Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC)

CIMIC is defined as a military function that supports the commander's mission by establishing and maintaining coordination and cooperation between the military force and civil actors in the commander's Area of Operations (AO).

The aim of CIMIC is to support the mission through three core functions:

  1. Conduct liaison with civil actors.
  2. Coordination of civil support to the CF.
  3. Coordination of CF support to civil actors.

CIMIC Operator (AIUM)

The CIMIC Operator is a two-week course run at PSTC. It is designed to supplement general military skills and knowledge to produce a civil-military operator capable of performing the duties required as part of a tactical CIMIC team on operations. The course does not replace continuation training conducted in the Land Force Areas or Theatre Mission Specific Training.

CIMIC Operator Prerequisites:

  • for Officers, be the rank of Lt or above;
  • for NCMs, be the rank of Sgt or above;
  • be employed or selected for employment in a Maritime, Land or Air deployed component CIMIC detachment or a CIMIC unit in an environmental CIMIC standing force or training establishment;
  • be recommended by the CO of their Unit;
  • be selected through a screening process conducted by their Area;
  • be medically and physically fit without employment restrictions; and
  • be able to work and communicate in the language of the International Community (English).

CIMIC STAFF OFFICER (AJIC)

The CIMIC Staff Officer is a two-week course run at PSTC. It is designed to produce staff officers and NCOs capable of operating within a tactical or operational headquarters on operations. The course does not replace continuation training conducted in the Land Force Areas or Theatre Mission Specific Training.

CIMIC Staff Officer Prerequisites:

  • Be a qualified CIMIC Operator (competency code AIUM) or equivalent;
  • For officers, be of the rank Capt or above;
  • For NCMs, be of the rank WO or above;
  • Be employed or selected for employment as a CIMIC Staff Officer in a Maritime, Land or Air deployed component of a Tactical or Operational HQ, or a CIMIC unit in an environmental CIMIC standing force or training establishment;
  • Be recommended by the chain of command;
  • Be medically and physically fit without employment restrictions; and
  • Be able to work and communicate in English.
